The Least Invasive Surgical Solution For Acid Reflux.
The least invasive surgical solution for acid reflux.
TIF is the latest surgical option to safely and effectively treat acid reflux disease, or GERD. A
completely incisionless procedure, TIF reconstructs the anti-reflux barrier between the
esophagus and stomach to provide a surgical solution for the anatomical cause of acid reflux. If
you are dissatisfied with your current medication, concerned about its long-term use or suffer
from complications, such as esophagitis, TIF may be for you.
Goshen Acid Reflux Center is the only facility in the area to offer TIF and was the first in Indiana to complete the procedure.
How it works
Normally, after swallowing, the lower esophageal sphincter valve (LES), located between the
esophagus and stomach, opens to allow food to pass, then closes to prevent stomach contents
and acid from “refluxing” back into the esophagus. In those with acid reflux, this valve is
dysfunctional, and must be repaired.

TIF is performed endoscopically (using a long, thin, flexible tube) with a specially designed
device that gently enters through a patient’s mouth to be positioned at the junction of the
stomach and esophagus. Once there, the device pulls and fastens the upper portion of the
stomach (fundus) and wraps (plicates) it around the lower portion of the esophagus. This
process is repeated multiple times to reconstruct a robust, tight valve that not only prevents the
reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, but effectively eliminates acid reflux and
restores the body’s natural protection against reflux.
Since TIF is completely incisionless, it is performed under general anesthesia. TIF generally
takes less than an hour to complete, and most people can go home the next day and return to
work within a few days following the procedure.
Benefits
In clinical studies, TIF patients reported 80 percent improvement in quality of life, significantly
improved satisfaction and reduction/elimination of heartburn symptoms. All patients
discontinued use of medication after the procedure, and nearly 80 percent remained off daily
PPIs (proton pump inhibitor medications) two years after surgery. Of those with asthma-related
acid reflux symptoms, 85 percent found relief when medications failed. TIF has also been
proven safe in hundreds of procedures worldwide. To date, side effects have been minimal.
Other benefits include:
• No external skin incisions
• No internal cutting or dissecting of the natural anatomy
• Reduces/eliminates complications and side effects of previous types of surgery
• More rapid recovery than Nissen fundoplication
• Does not limit future treatment options
• Can be revised, if required

provide a lifetime of relief if medications and lifestyle changes have failed to control your acid
reflux.
Cost
At this time, insurance coverage or TIF is very limited. However, a recent study reported that the lifetime costs of surgical treatment are
less than treatment using PPIs, assuming a person took the medication
for one-third of a normal lifespan. Call us at 877.886.4373, or attend our seminar, to find out if it may be the right option for you.
